Ucritic

LEAD DESIGNER

An all-in-one app, Ucritic, is designed to help individuals save time while finding the best-suited entertainment for them. Serving as a one-stop hub for entertainment, it offers built-in reviews for TV shows, movies, and streaming services. Users can personalize their preferences, enabling the app to suggest content and streaming services that align with their interests and budget. It also features a review system for user insights and informed recommendations.

Problem

Users face a variety of problems when it comes to finding what they want to watch on multiple streaming services. While some streaming services could only have certain content available in specific locations, some services may not offer the series or movies that capture consumers' interest. Users spend a significant portion of their free time trying to sort through the voluminous content on their streaming services. They are also dissatisfied that they have to spend their limited free time looking for new things to watch.

Solution

The platform (a mobile app) will include features such as built-in reviews for tv shows, movies and streaming services thus giving the users all the much-needed information in one convenient location. In addition, our platform will include many customization features that allow users to select their favourite genre, monthly budget and the average amount of time they spend on entertainment thus, with this information the platform can make informed suggestions to users, saving them time and frustration on trying to choose a specific show or movie.

Wireframes

A main page which shows what is trending, the users' recommendations, and top rated. For the time page, users can set up the time of how long the entertainment should be and they can activate it similar to the android clock. On the main page, there are three categories for users to pick movies/shows from. The users can select a platform of their budget for watching TV shows or movies and the review page has reviews from different websites.

UX Research

This study's objective is to gather specific pain points from participants. Our inquiries revolve around the types of users who watch and subscribe to streaming services. If their hobbies, work, or school life interferes with their watching habits. Our study also tries to delve into which streaming services participants subscribe to and how long it takes them to find content to watch. Other objectives of our research include determining whether users value watching movies and TV shows as part of their daily routine. Whether they are able to garner interest when it comes to watching something they like as well.

The two research methods that we used for this study were interviewing and surveying our participants. The interview was part of our qualitative research with a small group of eight. While the survey was part of our quantitative research. Our method tried to incorporate a mixed method of research where we tried to find a middle continuum.

Information Architecture

Personas

When analyzing the data we have collected through our interviews and surveys, we created an ideal persona that will illustrate our typical user. The persona we have created is of a student named Olivia (Figure 1) and she embodies the data collected from our interviews and survey.

On the other hand, the empathy map we created for our ideal user Olivia (Figure 2) heavily relies on the responses we gathered from our interviews. The data included in the empathy map is derived directly from our participants and their answers to our interview questions. Creating connections between what a user does, says, feels and thinks in regard to subscription services and watching content helps us understand the user on a more personal and deeper level and thus it goes beyond the quantitative data we have collected from our survey.
